- @Alpharts Tod: Under the Berne Convention, pretty much everything that is eligible for copyright is copyrighted by default. It isn't a question of "why does it need a copyright." It's that it has a copyright and therefore to belong on Commons it needs a free license. - Jmabel ! talk 00:01, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Jmabel: I'm no copyright expert. But I hear a lot of stuff about copyrights that just is not true. I've never heard this before. How does the news use pictures from facebook? Other people do too. Loads. All of the world. Pretty sure public is public. "According to Facebook's Statement of Rights and Responsibilities, any image posted with the Public setting carries the implicit acknowledgment that said photo is available for access and use by anyone" Souce Alpharts Tod (talk) 08:35, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- "The news" uses pictures from Facebook either by permission or on a fair use basis. Commons does not ever host images on a fair use basis, because we always5 intend that general reuse be possible, which would not be the case on a fair use basis.
- Being "sure" of something that isn't true doesn't make it true.
- The linked article may be accurate about reusing content within Facebook (I don't know Facebook's policies that closely) but certainly posting publicly on Facebook does not waive rights about the image being reused outside of Facebook. - Jmabel ! talk 20:42, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- On the last point, from a quick look at Facebook’s ToU, one problem I see is that the licence lasts only as long as they host the material, so users can pretty much revoke it by taking their content down (or designating it as non-public). OTOH we require licences to be valid in perpetuity.—Odysseus1479 (talk) 22:41, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Stemma logo[edit]
Come procedo? Grazie — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gianfranco Grieco (talk • contribs) 16:13, 20 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Gianfranco Grieco: Quale città? Quale stemma (collegamento/URL ? - Jmabel ! talk 00:06, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
@Jmabel La città è Viggiano, in Basilicata. Come posso procedere? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gianfranco Grieco (talk • contribs) 09:58, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
Forse it:Viggiano? - Jmabel ! talk 15:04, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
- (Just to be clear to anyone following: I'm making some use of Google Translate to help me phrase this. I read Italian pretty well, but I'm at a pretty elementary level writing it. I basically am triangulating from Spanish and Romanian, with some help from Google Translate.) - Jmabel ! talk 15:04, 22 September 2021 (UTC)
Hi, please can someone read my user page on here and do what it says on there for me, it's much appreciated if someone helps me on this. Speedcuber1 (talk) 01:57, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Speedcuber1: Your user page asks for two userboxes to be added to your English Wikipedia user page. Since you're blocked from editing English Wikipedia, it would be contrary to English Wikipedia's policies (en:WP:EVADE) for someone to make those edits on your behalf. Perhaps more pertinently, though, your user page already contains those userboxes, so adding them would seem pretty pointless. --bjh21 (talk) 10:14, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Bjh21: I meant making it so that they are the only 2 userboxes on my user page, is it really too much to ask? Speedcuber1 (talk) 17:38, 21 September 2021 (UTC)

Showing original copyright[edit]
Hi, I'm new to uploading files and can't figure out how to cite "original work" when I have created a "derivative work" using SVG. To use an example involving maps, do I just need to cite the organization, e.g., OCHA maps by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) or the organization and the map, e.g., Afghanistan - Location Map (2013) - AFG - UNOCHA.svg by UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)? Use of {{PD-US-no notice ad}}[edit]
Everything I have uploaded to wikimedia commons so far has been disputed so I am coming here to ask before I upload. I am trying to find an image of Willie Bobo for his Wikipedia article.
I have found an image in a 1966 copy of Cash Box. It seems that it should meet {{PD-US-no notice ad}} licencing as it is an advert without a copyright published in a periodical between 1926 and 1977. I was inspired by the image on the Otis Redding page. Would appreciate some in put as I seem to put my foot in it a lot at the moment. Vladimir.copic (talk) 06:56, 21 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Vladimir.copic: Hi, and welcome. The periodical is clearly marked "Copyright © 1966 by The Cash Box Publishing Co., Inc. All rights reserved. Copyright under Universal Copyright Convention." in the bottom left corner of page 3. Was it registered and renewed? Please see COM:HIRTLE. — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 19:40, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- Unfortunately, I don't see any way this could be public domain based on the available information. As Jeff pointed out, there is a copyright notice on the first page of the magazine. Per COM:HIRTLE, anything published in 1966 with a notice is copyrighted for 95 years from publication, so the magazine and its contents would become public domain in 2062. It's possible that the advertisement photo was published elsewhere previously without a notice, but that would require some extra legwork to determine (also see COM:US#Copyright formalities for caveats). You could ask at COM:VPC for help researching it. clpo13(talk) 19:57, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- I browsed the link provided by Clpo13 and saw no information specific to advertisements. The background I previously read leads me to believe that magazines are considered collective works in which the magazine's publisher does not hold exclusive copyright. Verve Records would hold copyright over the advertisement independent of the copyright of Cash Box Publishing. Therefore, lack of a copyright notice for the advertisement would make it PD even if the parent publication is still copyrighted. Am I wrong in this assumption? I'm quite certain this site hosts a considerable amount of content with circumstances exactly as I just described.RadioKAOS (talk) 21:06, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks RadioKAOS, clpo13, Jeff G.. I was basing my assumption on this image being public domain as it comes from an advert without a copyright notice in an issue of Billboard which had a copyright notice. Vladimir.copic (talk) 21:49, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Vladimir.copic: I wasn't even aware of that template. I mistakenly thought we were just talking about {{PD-US-no notice}}, which doesn't mention ads. I apologize for the confusion. While current copyright law says that a single notice can serve to cover an entire periodical, I don't know what the case was in 1966. The 1973 copyright compendium seems to suggest individual contributions needed separate notices, but it doesn't appear to mention ads. I suppose it makes sense, though, since contributions such as articles and photos may either have their own copyright or be under a contract granting rights to the publisher of the periodical, but ads would be entirely separate and therefore needed their own notices. You wouldn't expect, say, Billboard to own the copyright to a Gillette advertisement, for instance. Anyways, if there's precedent, I think it should be fine. clpo13(talk) 22:19, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Am I being spoofed/hacked?[edit]
Hello. I uploaded an image this morning that I believe to be public domain (BobbyFranklin_-_Cleveland_Browns) based on similar images on the Wikipedia pages of this player's teammates (Jim Brown, Johnny Brewer). I don't believe there should be an issue.
Regardless, I received the following email:
When I click on the "help desk" link in the "Getting Help" section I am taken to what I consider to be an extremely offensive image.
So, two questions - 1. Is this a legitimate email, and, if so, why would I be sent to a link such as this - or am I just being hacked?
2. If there IS an issue with this image, how do I fix it? The other images (Jim Brown, Johnny Brewer) are from the same set of images. I know for certain that whoever might have posted the picture of Johnny Brewer did NOT create the image, but I don't believe it should be removed.
Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Apfenn1 (talk • contribs) 16:22, 26 September 2021 (UTC)

- @Apfenn1: To solve the problem with File:BobbyFranklin - Cleveland Browns.jpg, you need to find a reason why the picture is free for anyone to use for any purpose. You've claimed that the copyright owner has released it under the CC0 declaration. If that's true, we'd need some evidence of it (hence the "no permission" tag). If there's some other reason why the picture is free, you should tag the picture appropriately. For a photo from the 1960s, the likely reasons are that it was published before 1978 without a copyright notice ({{PD-US-no-notice}}) or that it was published before 1964 and its copyright was not renewed ({{PD-US-not-renewed}}). Do you know if either of those was the case? --bjh21 (talk) 17:31, 26 September 2021 (UTC)
- @UTC: Thanks for your reply. So the photo was published before 1978 without a copyright notice, ie, {{PD-US-no-notice}}. Bulk recategorization request[edit]
Hi, I found that the category "History of the American Civil War (1867)" has lots of files that should be categorized into "History of the American Civil War (1871)" (which I just created), as it is a different edition of the same book. The files in question contain the following string in their title: "<%> of 'History of the American Civil War, etc'", instead of "History of the American Civil War (1867)"
Also by the way, is there a better place to ask/handle recategorization requests? Best, --Enyavar (talk) 12:27, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
Pipe organs in the state of Oregon.[edit]
There is a pipe organ in the Morningside UMC Salem Oregon which has been there for 40 years just wondering why it was not listed? It is small and may be removed before too long due to the high cost of maintenance. —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 2601:1C1:8B02:6D70:A4A9:DC05:1573:19FA (talk) 19:21, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
- Was this question intended for Wikimedia Commons, or for some other site (perhaps a talk page on the English-language Wikipedia?). If it's not of Commons, it's probably simply because no one has uploaded a photo of it. Issue with tif file transparency[edit]
A few uploads I've done of tif files have a second page of all black. Are there any tutorials or guidance on how to convert an image and upload it without a background (read: transparent) and only a single transparent page to wikimedia (using GIMP)? I've used GIMP to make an alpha channel and delete the background. Then locally the image looks like it has a transparent background, but the second page of all black appears for some reason after upload and sometimes a white background appears after it loads in wikipedia. See en:Charles Stewart (New Jersey politician) and File:Col. Charles Stewart signature.tiff as an example. --Engineerchange (talk) 20:29, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
image for publication[edit]
Hi – I would like to use the following image for a scientific paper (to be submitted to a journal for publication) and understand it is under the Creative Commons license and so free to copy and use for my purpose: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Kizzmekia_Corbett_at_NIH_(cropped).jpg
However, this page also stipulates “You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license.” Where would I find this info? Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 167.244.212.100 (talk) 21:25, 27 September 2021 (UTC)
- You would find this information right on the page you linked. The author is Kizzmekia Corbett. It is under a Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International license, and the link for that, as provided on the page, is https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/deed.en. - Jmabel ! talk 17:21, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
- That said, I see a possible problem here: it claims the subject of the photo as the author, but it doesn't look like a selfie. @The Squirrel Conspiracy: as uploader, can you explain what is going on here? Also @Chocolatekizz86:, as original uploader of the work from which this is derived, do you have any explanation? - Jmabel ! talk 17:24, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
By “You must give appropriate credit", does that mean the "author" listed on that page? And if so, how would I word this? —Preceding unsigned comment was added by 167.244.212.100 (talk) 20:09, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
- Yes, that is what it means; since no particular formula is specified for crediting this particular photo, presumably anything within reason, as long as it is combined with an indication of the license. - Jmabel ! talk 21:25, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
¡Saludos!

- @CBellaro: You don't say what site "your" page is on, but if it is on Wikipedia or another WMF site, ;and assuming both logos are on Commons, then in the wikitext simply replace the name of the old image with the name of the new one. Copyright help regarding File:Newspaper Photo of Eisenhower and Paul Carroll w. headline and caption.pdf[edit]
I need help getting a 1952 headline and photo from the NY Herald Tribune April 12, 1952 approved for Commons and eventually incorporated into a wikipedia article on one the subjects in the photo (Paul Carroll, who died in 1954.--Dwc451degrees (talk) 23:04, 28 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Dwc451degrees: Hi, and welcome. Where did you get it? Why use the PDF format? — Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me 14:43, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- I suspect Herald Tribune copyrights got renewed, and unless someone did something active to license it, it's probably unfree. The NYC papers and their successors were pretty careful about renewing copyrights, much more so than elsewhere in the U.S. - Jmabel ! talk 19:06, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- But I now see this is an Associated Press photo. Probably better to ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright. Someone will know the status of AP photos from that era. I'm going to guess it's even more likely to have been renewed than the Herald Tribune. - Jmabel ! talk 19:13, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- (Edit conflict) It looks like the photo is actually from the Associated Press, so it probably has a copyright status separate from that of the paper. I'd think the AP would have been very scrupulous about maintaining copyright status, but this article suggests maybe not, at least for older photographs (see also [1]: "It was found that only a few images were registered for copyright and those copyrights were not renewed."). In order to be sure, we'd probably need to know who the photographer was. As Jmabel said, COM:VPC would be the place to ask. clpo13(talk) 19:19, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- The NY Herald Tribune ceased publication in 1966, so non-renewal of copyright is certainly a possibility, but would need to be specifically researched. As noted the included photo is not original to the Herald Tribune, but clearly credited to the Associated Press, still in business. Unless you can get specific evidence that both the photo and the newspaper did not have their copyrights renewed, free license cannot just be assumed, so this should not be on Commons. -- Infrogmation of New Orleans (talk) 17:50, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

Same as the subject... — Preceding unsigned comment added by Quezergue (talk • contribs) 22:12, 29 September 2021 (UTC)
- @Quezergue: Then you certainly know who the copyright holder is (the subject of the selfie is the photographer, so they own the copyright). If you can get them to issue a "free license", then we can use it. The easiest way for them to offer such a license would be to indicate the specific license in the same place they posted their picture, e.g. "I release this under a CC-BY-SA 4.0 license; just credit me as the photographer." If you or they want a more formal process, there is COM:VRT, which is of course a lot more complicated than them writing a single sentence. - Jmabel ! talk 00:51, 30 September 2021 (UTC)

How to fill out the form on the Upload Wizard[edit]
I have a question about uploading to Wikimedia Commons. The person doing the uploading will be uploading two things. First are photographs of paintings painted by her mother, an artist. The mother is dead, so the daughter owns the copyright and has obtained permission from the person who photographed the paintings. Can you tell me how to fill out the Upload Wizard form: Is the source the photographer and the author the painter? And then which Creative Commons license is the right one? I don’t understand the differences. The daughter is fine with sharing the work, even for modification. The second item is a photograph of the artist taken by a newspaper, which has given permission to use it. Same questions. Thanks so much. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SlowForm (talk • contribs) 22:06, 30 September 2021 (UTC)
- @SlowForm:Some of this may not readily be done with the Upload Wizard, and I'm guessing that if you had enough expertise not to use the Wizard at all, you wouldn't be asking this sort of question, so my suggestion is, in general, get as close as you can with the Wizard & then expect you may have to do some editing on the uploaded file.
- For the photos of the mother's art: I'd recommend {{Cc-by-sa-4.0-heirs}}. In particular, that requires that the images be attributed, which I'm guessing is desired in this case. Yes, the mother/painter is the author. (This assumes that the images just show the painting as such, not--for example--a frame, or a room with the painting hanging on the wall. Those cases are more complicated, let me know if you need that.) I would give source as something like "Image provided by User:EXAMPLE, daughter of the artist", or if she prefers "Image provided by [[User:EXAMPLE|actual name]], daughter of the artist". By the way, it still might be necessary to go through the COM:VRT process so that the daughter can vouch more specifically for being the artist's heir. This is especially the case if the account uses a pseudonym.
- The newspaper ones are trickier. "Has given permission to use it" isn't enough. They need to give a specific license. This can either be done via the COM:VRT process or having the copyright-holder indicate the license on a web page that is clearly under their control.
- Also, please see COM:SIGN. - Jmabel ! talk 01:57, 1 October 2021 (UTC)

Organizational Logo[edit]
We are being asked by wikimedia to permit the use of our logo in a wikipedia article about our organization. We are referred to the commons which says by permitting its use we authorize others to use/sell and do other things with our logo. That is not our intent. It is a graphic that is appropriate for our website, but not for others to use as their property. Please advise. — Preceding unsigned comment added by SGS06 (talk • contribs) 14:40, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
- @SGS06: My advice? Tell them you are perfectly happy to have it used on a fair-use basis for articles about your company in languages where that is allowed but, no, you are not interested in free-licensing your logo, so it can't go on Commons.
- FWIW, do understand, though, that copyright and trademark are two totally different matters. I don't know your logo (you didn't link a URL) but unless it really involves significant artwork, you might want to free-license it in terms of copyright, while being specific about retaining trademark. We (Commons) have a template {{Trademarked}} for just that sort of thing. See, for example, File:UNESCO flag.png. - Jmabel ! talk 17:34, 1 October 2021 (UTC)
